If an artist formerly known from his children's books decides to make a film, what would he name it? Cannibal Flesh Riot, of course! Gris Grimly directed his debut short with a passion, paying attention to storyline and dialogue. Cannibal Flesh Riot! is not related to Umberto Lenzi-inspired gut-munchers, but more like classic horror films from 40's or 50's. With a twisted sense of humour, of course. In Cannibal Flesh Riot! we witness two redneck ghouls on a trip to graveyard, to feast with corpses 6 feet under. A clear influence from the world of comic books shows along the film, and the cover letter proves this true. E.C. horror comics are one of the main influences of Gris Grimly, and he has found a nice, fun and stylish way to show it. The dialogue and the plot are written with thought, but the great amount of talk doesn't last interesting enough for the whole picture. Even though the main characters, grave digging redneck ghouls Stash and Hub (David Backhaus and Dustin Loreque) are fairly funny and though I enjoyed listening to their ranting at some level, I began to expect more action than Cannibal Flesh Riot! ever delivers. Still, there are plenty of things to be glad about: Gris Grimly's host performance in the beginning, a true E.C. Horror Comics style ending, great camera work, stop motion sequences (wow!), stylish sets, overall careful and skillful production...in fact, Cannibal Flesh Riot! is so good looking that this could work as a lesson to low-budget filmmakers out there. If you love one or more of Grimly's influences, then this is your treat. And for 30 minutes of your life, you can safely give Cannibal Flesh Riot! a chance. Great music written by ex-Nekromantix Peter Sandorff (and performed by his new band Hola Ghost), who was collaborating with Gris Grimly from the very beginning. |
