Jason Baustin's 20-minute short film Change is Coming takes an interesting look at the desperation. John has lost his girlfriend and his job, and soon the eviction from the rental apartment is inevitable. When there is no other help, he grabs the knife and starts to ask questions about the meaning of life. Change is Coming takes never an easy route, but challenges the viewer to ponder the religion, life itself and the purpose of our existence. The threatening and desperate atmosphere gives an extra touch to the little story, that has more impact than most feature films today. A large part of the plausibility can be credited to capable actors and actresses, such as Clayton Myers in the lead role and Richard Cutting as the priest. And to be honest, I never expected to see such a classy and intelligent surprise ending. Handheld camera works here well, since the world of the protagonist is shaking too. The colors and the overall image quality is very sharp, and is a pleasure to watch. Melancholic score by Josh Guss fits perfectly in the mood, although I would have preferred more variety. All in all, Change is Coming brings a welcome change to stories like these. |
